In the 1940s, Gracey curettes were designed by Doctor Clayton Gracey, hence their name. With the innovative design of these curettes, Dr. Gracey was looking for:
- Specific design for specific areas of the dental arch.
- Availability of a specific cutting edge on each of the blades.
- Angled cut for ease of access and visibility.
- Curvature in both planes.
- Designs with a great adaptation to the root surface.
As a common feature, the different Gracey curettes stand out for their versatility. However, there are 18 types and each type is specific to a dental area. Thus, each Gracey curette has a different tip angle and stem length. Thanks to this, the optimal angles required by each intervention in the curettage and scraping maneuvers can be achieved. The following nomenclatures can be found on Gracey Curettes:
- 1 / 2 , 3 -/4 For anterior teeth.
- 5 /6 For anterior teeth and premolars
- 7 /8 , 9 /10 For buccal and lingual surfaces on premolars and molars
- 11/12 For mesial surfaces on premolars and molars.
- 13 /14 For distal faces in premolars and molars.
- 15 /16 It has the same curvatures as the 13/14 curette, but the blade is designed to reach the mesial posterior surfaces.
- 17/18 With sharp angles that improve access to the posterior distal surfaces. Smaller and slightly longer blade.
